From Utah to Los Angeles, this captivating alternative trio has made all the right moves thus far. For The Moth & The Flame's first nationwide release, they enlisted veteran drummer and producer Joey Waronker (Atoms for Peace, Beck) to ensure they made an EP that represented what they wanted to sound like on record. Songs like “Sorry,” “Winsome," and “Silver Tongue” all come together with a dense, compressed mix that’s much easier on the ears than one might suppose. It’s an immense sound beyond that of a mere trio. Even the low-key “Monster” is layered into grand textures beyond just drummer Andrew Tolman, keyboardist/singer Mark Garbett, and guitarist/singer Brandon Robbins. Time will tell where the trio's sound takes them. (A follow-up full-length album is planned for 2014; it'll be produced by Peter Katis, best known for his work with The National.)
