Album Review

The first solo album by British producer and remixer DJ Fresh (a longtime mover in the global drum'n'bass underground who runs a popular website and message board besides his prodigious list of credits), Escape from Planet Monday is straightforward club-oriented dance music with a handful of pop elements. Although the grooves are paramount throughout this 70-minute set, DJ Fresh (aka Dan Stein) fashions his beats into proper songs, with guest vocals from Apollo 440's Mary Byker and the Pet Shop Boys' Neil Tennant, who provides his inimitable vocals on the epic, spacy album closer, "Throw," over a bed of pinging synth washes and a Spanish-style acoustic guitar. Turntablist supreme DJ Shadow provides another key guest spot, providing vintage horn and vocal parts on the slinky groove "Closer," the album's most immediately effective track. However, most of Escape from Planet Monday is a one-man affair, and DJ Fresh is structurally clever and musically aware enough to keep the album interesting and varied throughout.

Customer Reviews

Great album!

While many of these tracks are old (6 months or older) there are a few new gems. DJ Fresh is legendary and his impact on D&B/Breakbeat culture is undeniable. I highly recommend this album to anyone who is looking to "get into" Drum & Bass.

Good stuff

Very charismatic DnB. This is not dance, so I'm not sure what iTunes was thinking. Also ,pink ipod, you need to get a life and stop reviewing bands that are not in your genre taste (and maybe, just maybe, you could say something as to why you don't like a band, besides "hate it!") I've seen your other "bad" reviews and all of them say the same thing.

DJ Fresh, Selecta!

Everyone who loves drum n bass knows that Fresh is the mastermind behing Bad Company UK and many floor fillers. This album is great and i love the track Nervous.

Influenced by tapes brought back from illegal raves by older friends, he bought his first turntables in his teens, and while at university, started playing late-night sets on local pirate radio stations. In 1999, as part of the drum'n'bass collective Bad Company, he founded record label BC Recordings and the scene's most popular website, Dogs on Acid. After leaving to pursue a solo career,...
