A Very Tasty Variety Six-Pack!

Love the lyrics -- positive, mature. I was especially impressed with the variety of the music -- different singers, different grooves, everything from a long spacey jam to pretty ballads.

Killer live album!!!!

Full disclosure: I really like this band. This album, which was recorded live in a studio in San Francisco, includes both staples from the FOB concert repertoire, as well as a couple of previously unrecorded songs. Kick It Open features Pete Sears on vocals, with GE Smith and Barry Sless on lead guitars. Very fine. Blink of an Eye sucks you into a throbbing vibe, showcasing the vocals of Ann McNamee. Wise Man in the Desert has been a core element of FOB shows for several years, with excellent solos by Sears, Smith and Sless. Take Me With You is a rollicking tune where harmonica, piano, and guitar trade licks. Slow Dance starts gently and builds to an incredible Sless solo at the end. If you buy the album, you get a 20-minute version of Nick of Time > Devil's Kitchen, complete with a very intense jam. These are the songs that often end a FOB show, and this version delivers the goods. The FOBs are not a typical jam band. They are more focused on lyrics -- and vocals -- than is typical these days. In that sense, they are derived more from the Dead than from Phish. That makes sense, given all the gigs they have played with Bob Weir and Mickey Hart.

The FOBs Charge Ahead

Ten years of musical greatness, thousands of satisfied Fans across the land and it just keeps getting better. Possibly their best release yet! Slow Dance is my favorite… the show stopper.
