9 Songs, 41 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Eternally Even is Jim James’ “What’s Going On” moment. The MMJ frontman conducts a symphony of sounds—like ‘70s patchwork soul, psych, and space-y trip-hop—to speak out against the world’s ills. Songs like “Same Old Lie” and “True Nature” are pointed laments against greed, violence, and inequality tucked inside rhapsodic soul. “Here in Spirit” and “The World’s Smiling Now” simmer with hope, the latter recalling Bill Withers’ warmth and groove. In his own unique and intimate way, Eternally Even nourishes the spirit by engaging the body as well as the brain.

Mellow Mood

Take it from a guy who knew nothing about Jim James until a few days ago. I was browsing the "new music" selections, came across some crazy album art, gave the first track a listen and the rest is history. It flows start to finish extremely well. This is up there with my top 5 albums of the year.

This LP is best served with bourbon and a sofa. Something you mellow out to.

Gold, Jerry. Gold.
