A gem!

First of all, this is NOT a "rock" album; it is a wonderful folk-bluegrass-country crossover record. Story-and-image-rich songs, most of which were composed by unheralded but exceptionally talented Portland (Oregon) songwriter Rob Barteletti, are gorgeously sung by also-unheralded, equally-talented Reina Collins. As songwriter and performer these two are a match made in musical heaven. And it is time this heavenly pair were heard on earth! Some details: Barteletti is a thinking-person's songwriter, a true lyrical poet who is as adept writing from a feminine perspective ("Honky-Tonk Band" and "Harlan County") as from a masculine point-of-view ("Youth Is Wasted," his only vocal on the album). All of his songs engage the listener with their universal wisdom, wry wit, irony, and beauty. I can't single any out because of the remarkably consistent quality of each, but personal favorites are the title song, "Yonder Ship, "Too Costly," and "Something Blue." Collins is a singer who will remind you of the great ones with her rich alto register and her insightful interpretation of lyrics and melodies. A talent like hers comes along once in a blue moon, and she deserves to be recognized as such. And she's no slouch as a songwriter with four strong contributions to the record. Instrumental support is top-notch, especially the playing of banjo-dobro master Tony Furtado and guitar-great (and co-producer) Terry Robb. This album is a gem!
