The Horrors

The Horrors

Despite being released in 2000, the debut from this Iowan garage rock trio (two guitars, one drum) is every bit as essential a part of the '90s garage rock explosion as anything by the Gories, Oblivians or Bassholes.  Topped out distortion, howling feedback and perfectly executed doublings in volume (see the crashing second verse of first cut, "Every Inch of My Love," and the slide guitar that takes over track 2, "The Next Train I See").  Finding the middle ground between Pussy Galore's Right Now!, Howlin' Wolf and Charlie Feathers, The Horrors offers garage rock fans a white-noise drenched update of the bedrock riffs and unbridled energy of classic blues, rockabilly and rock 'n' roll with out-of-tune guitars and alternately tortured and enraged vocals. Not to be confused with the British garage rock band of the same name, the Horrors only released this and a follow-up (2003's Vent) before fading back into obscurity.
