Album Review

Pianist Chad Lawson and his trio with bassist Zack Page and drummer Alfred Sergel primarily perform easy listening jazz on this set. They interpret four of Lawson's originals, a song apiece by Sting, the Beatles, and Christopher Cornell, and four standards. The music is actually more diverse than the treatments, for nearly every selection is taken at a slow thoughtful tempo. The trio's heartfelt and melodic renditions are excellent and they communicate well with each other, but this set would have benefited from more tempo and mood variations. That way it would rise above the level of superior background music.

Excellent piano trio album

Being a fan of both electronic and jazz music, I found the almost drum'n'bass style played by a traditional jazz trio a surprisingly good fit. I think the rest of the album fits that description as well. Everything from the peaceful but interesting treatment of Black Hole Sun to the 5/4 delicacy of Every Little Thing She Does is Magic and Michelle in a 6/8 two-over-three style "just works" and works well. This has become one of my favorite albums, and not as background music. This group's clever interpretations and psychic intra-group musical communication make this album a top-shelf selection. And I suppose it works well as background music as well.

As a five-year-old kid, Lawson wanted music lessons after seeing Sha-Na-Na on TV. As is typical, those lessons turned out to be mostly classically-oriented piano ones. When it came time to go to college, he applied to the Peabody Conservatory, but decided to...
