Album Review

Retreat from the Sun began its life as Anna Waronker's first solo album, and if you listen intently, those origins are apparent, particularly in the tenor of the songs themselves. that dog. previously veered toward cute-pop, and while there are remnants of that throughout the album, Waronker's songs are considerably more personal than before, which adds emotional depth to the record. Just as important, her songs are tighter and more melodic, demonstrating considerable growth in songcraft. Producer Brad Wood helps form these songs into shiny alterna-pop nuggets, making Retreat from the Sun into the best album Liz Phair never made. It comes at the expense of the raw, ragged and surprisingly hooky post-punk of Totally Crushed Out, which was quite charming in its own right, but with maturity do come greater rewards, as Retreat from the Sun proves.

Customer Reviews

Brilliant

Every song on this album is gold. Seriously. Anna just has this amazing voice, and I love the use of violin in the songs. Looking for a suggestion for a sample? I reccommend Gagged and Tied, Never say Never, and Being with you. You will not be disappointed.

Anna Waronker is god!

Since both "Totally Crushed Out" and That Dog's debut have been reviewed (they are both equally as good as "Retreat"), I'll lend a hand with this album. If you're a fan of great Pop tunesmithing, you owe it to yourself to find out more about Anna Waronker's first band. Their approach is light-hearted without being overly cloying, crunchy without being unlistenable...whatever direction you least expect That Dog to take, they go for it, always with solid results. "Retreat" is by far the band's most "commercial" sounding effort, and that is meant in the best possible way. "Gagged and Tied" and "Minneapolis" are probably the most immediately lovable tracks, but the whole affair brims with alt-rock energy. If you want more, please check out "Anna," --- Waronker's solid debut CD which contains one of the best tracks of the decade ('00s) in "I Wish You Well." Oh, and iTunes..... this is NOT Jazz, though we can forgive you by virtue of even selling That's Dog's releases!

get it.

perfect album. 'nuff said.

The lineup of the Los Angeles-based indie pop quartet that dog. represented the flowering of a second generation of musical luminaries: singer/guitarist Anna Waronker was the daughter of famed producer and Warner Bros. head Lenny Waronker, while bassist Rachel Haden and her violinist sister, Petra, were two of the triplet daughters born to jazz titan Charlie Haden. Friends since high school, the trio first began playing music together in Waronker's bedroom in the early '90s. Joined by drummer Tony...
