iTunes Review

Even though many of the songs on Are We There muse on the pain of difficult relationships (plainly evident in the titles of tunes like “Your Love Is Killing Me” and “I Love You But I’m Lost”), Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Sharon Van Etten sounds strikingly confident on the follow-up to her stellar 2012 album, Tramp. Whether she’s leading a dusky, after-hours synth-rock dirge (“Break Me”) or mournful piano ballad (the sublime “I Know”), Van Etten is brilliantly self-possessed. Alternating between a chilling whisper and throaty wail, the songwriter's forceful yearning—for sleep, for patience, for a romantic silver lining—unifies much of Are We There. But in such capable hands, suffering has rarely sounded so good.

We are There!

I was looking for some new music to jam to during the summer, and I think I have found. Before searching through the Alternative section of iTunes, I had nver heard of Sharon Van Etten. I think the only reason why I clicked on the album in the first place was because of the album cover. It looked like it would be a good album. Yeah, I know it sounds petty but when you hear this album you will instantly fall in love with it. It's good to find an album that you don't want to skip any of the songs on it. Thank you, Sharon Van Etten for choosing such a mysterious and cool looking album artwork ;))))

Very disappointing….

I’m apparently the only one disappointed in this. I’m all for new directions, but this album finds SVE taking a turn in the wrong direction.

Frankly, it sounds like over-produced, BAD 80s, Giorgio Moroder produced music.

Her voice and songwriting remain beautiful, however...

Breathtakingly emotional...

I've never written a review before... All I can say is if you're familiar with her music...if it touches your soul...listen to this album. Seeing her in Cleveland in June.

Although she was born and raised in suburban New Jersey, Sharon Van Etten's folk music evokes the open landscapes of a more expansive America. A dedicated choir student during her childhood, she studied clarinet, violin, and piano before moving on to guitar. She began writing songs as high school student and sang in a choir group, the Madrigals. She credits her choral experiences as indispensable in learning to musically notate, as well as to sing harmonies. Upon graduation, Van Etten moved to Murfreesboro,...
