iTunes Review

If the cello and french horn introduction to album opener "The Shining" don't give it away, one should be warned that Manchester, England's Damon Gough (aka Badly Drawn Boy) doesn't make conventional albums. His recordings and concert performances tend to be wildly erratic, filled with baroque pop overtures, tiny instrumental snippets on arcane instruments, humor, and-most importantly-some of the most beautiful folk-pop you'll ever hear. Though he's often compared to Beck, it's not really an accurate comparison. More than just great songs, Badly Drawn Boy, in the tradition of Randy Newman, the Beatles, and Harry Nilsson, writes great song cycles. Here, on the The Hour of Bewilderbeast, we trace a relationship gone sour through every pop sound imaginable. From the jazz piano of "Magic in the Air" to the funky "Once Around the Block," this and is filled with catchy hooks, charming lyricism, and Gough's considerable wit.

A Songwriter's Album

This is a great textbook to anyone who writes, or wants to begin writing songs. This work transcends the need for hi-fidelity, and in fact, it's lo-fi character is simply endearing- (Let this be a lesson to those who are obsessed with audio quality when recording their music). There isn't a moment of weakness on the record, and provides something different on each and every track, and somehow remains cohesive, well....mostly cohesive. This album is not for everyone, at the same time, it should be. People with a.d.d. need not bother. This will take several listens, and then you should realize that it's simply one of the most sincere works of art in the last few years. Stand-out tracks are "Camping Next To Water", Stone On The Water", "Everybody's Stalking", "The Shining", "Magic InThe Air", "Cause A Rockslide", and all the others fare closely. Again, there is no weakness here. I put it in my top ten records of all time.

Best album ever purchased.

Searching and searching to find the perfect indie band, I came upon Badly Drawn Boy. Damon Gough has become an idol to me with his exquisite music productions. With a combination of unpopular instruments such as french horns, mixed with amazing guitar, musical fusion becomes present in Gough's wonderful work. I will continue to be a major fan of the one and only, Badly Drawn Boy.

In My Top Ten of Indie Albums from 2000-2006

He is a genius there is no doubt about that. The Shining is the best song on the album. But the fact that his lyrics and guitar mesh so well together it is just an amazing listen. I recommend it to anyone who just wants a cd they can fall asleep to and enjoy at the same time because as a guitarist he is a genius with the acoustic.

Belying his status as a narcoleptic slacker icon, Badly Drawn Boy proved himself a tireless pop songwriter, with arrangements that reflect a great deal of creativity. Born Damon Gough, he began recording after meeting the like-minded Andy Votel at a Manchester nightclub. The pair formed the Twisted Nerve label, and Gough debuted as Badly Drawn Boy with an EP and several singles. The recordings dovetailed nicely with the experimentalist pop fringe of artists like Scott 4 and the Beta Band, and the...
