iTunes Review

Ringo Starr's 2010 album Y Not gathers together a mixture of spirited, gloriously fun-loving rock 'n' roll and a few moments of unexpected poignancy. Joe Walsh appears on the opener "Fill In the Blanks" while newbie Joss Stone makes a guest appearance on the fiery "Who's Your Daddy." Old friend Paul McCartney duets on "Walk With You," a track also co-written with Van Dyke Parks. Even with many guests, Y Not feels more like one of Ringo Starr's most cohesive albums. A few moments touch on nostalgia and past journeys, but his charm and love of good, old-fashioned rock 'n' roll are what carry the album.

Strong Effort

"Y Not" is another strong effort from Ringo Starr who, after bottoming out commercially in 1983 when his Old Wave LP couldn't even get released in the U.S., has come back strong in the 1990s. And that strong comeback continues to this day. I think what happened was that Ringo spent too much time in the late 1970s being a "celebrity" and less time as a musician. This changed when he got sober and put together his All-Starr touring bands. Since then, starting with the "Time Takes Time" album, each effort has been consistently strong with some tunes strong enough to easily hold their own against Ringo's early solo efforts. Despite the success and the genuine enjoyment at an All-Starrs concert, I can't help but wonder what a real Ringo (all two hours of his music) would be like. Much of his solo material has been ignored and it would be interesting to see if a live treatment could rejuvenate some of his more underrated songs such as "A Dose of Rock n Roll" (off "Rotogravure") or "Hard Times (off of "Bad Boy). His collaborations with Paul McCartney on the new CD are probably the highlights for me. The harmony vocal on "Walk With You" is a thing of beauty and "Peace Dream" is one of the catchiest tunes on the CD. Upon first listen, I couldn't get Ringo's "Who's Your Daddy" chorus out of my head. While the lyrics and pretty simplistic I must say I am very impressed with Ringo's production of the CD. All in all, a fantastic effort which whets the appetite for an All Starrs Tour this summer. Well done!

Who's YOUR daddy??

What a way to start off a decade. Ringo, with a little help from his friends, make a great album containing 10 singles were no two sound alike. Listen to the whole album and realize ALL musicians would jump at the chance to play with the Starr. Who's your daddy? Look in the mirror or a photograph. If you have peace and starrs in your eyes buy this album and ask papa for more.

Another great listen from Ringo...

Ringo really has been hitting his stride in the new millennium...his records lately have been as good as anything from the early 70's (which I love). It really comes through that Ringo just loves making music. This record is no exception. It's nice to hear Ringo in the producer's chair for a change, to actually hear what the man himself intends. It's another feel good record. Looking forward to putting it on my ipod and cruising up the coast with the top down. Keep making cool records Ringo!

Ringo Starr, born Richard Starkey, was the drummer in the Beatles from 1962 to 1970 and thus became one of the most famous musicians of the '60s. Though the least prominent member of the quartet, he distinguished himself as an occasional singer of good-natured material and as an actor. Upon the group's split, Starr went solo with two novelty projects: the first, an album called Sentimental Journey, found him covering pre-rock standards, and the second, Beaucoups of Blues, was a country music collection....
