EDITORS’ NOTES

Some couples repair rifts in their relationships with expensive therapy. Beyoncé and JAY-Z tour stadiums together and surprise-release collaborative albums that mine their self-mythologized personal drama for big-ticket entertainment. Sonically closer to Beyoncé’s 2016 high-art airing of dirty laundry Lemonade than Jay’s 2017 response 4:44, this isn’t just rubbernecking at the doings inside America’s royal family—it’s a challenging, tense, and thoroughly catchy summertime romp in its own right. When Beyoncé sings, “I can’t believe we made it,” in the appropriately aggressive “APES**T,” she might be referring to the détente in their high-profile marriage; she might mean this very album. The fun is in decoding—but it’s hardly the only fun.

Awful album

Beyonce needs to stop this practice of releasing albums and/or singles back to back. The quality of her music has been declining in recent years. Everything is Love is a reflection of that ongoing deterioration. At this point, all of her songs sound like theme and variations. She’s offering nothing new other than visuals and vocal acrobatics, which tend to be tedious. I was a follower of her since Destiny’s Child and of course, her first two solo albums. I’m tired of her and her media apparatus. Done.

Overhyped

Just because it's Beyoncé and Jay-Z doesn't mean it's good music. Spend your money on something else

A MASTERPIECE

A beautiful culmination of what happened after the events of Lemonade and 444. This shows the growth in their relationship and how they moved forward. They both were able to remain polished, skilled, soulful while also remaining current. Plus their CHEMISTRY is perfection. It is truly a cohesive project betwixt two legendary artists. We already stan but we have redecided to stan FOREVER.

About THE CARTERS

Beyoncé and Jay-Z co-headlined a second stadium tour in 2018 and during its first leg released a triumphant collaborative album, Everything Is Love, under the name the Carters. At the conclusion of the duo's London Stadium performance on June 16, the video for "Apeshit," a new song recorded with Quavo, Offset, and Pharrell Williams, was premiered for the crowd, who were also the first to be informed, via LCD display, "ALBUM OUT NOW." Everything Is Love was immediately available for streaming and download on Tidal, and was available elsewhere two days later. The personal and largely celebratory album, balanced between contemporary R&B and rap with contributions from the likes of Cool & Dre, Boi-1da, and Ty Dolla $ign, debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, as Beyoncé and Jay-Z eased into the second half of their tour's European leg. The U.S. tour ran from late July to the first week of October.
