Album Review

Prolific Massachusetts singer/songwriter Melissa Ferrick changes course from the stripped-down D.I.Y. feel of her last album, the one-woman band feel of The Other Side, with the far more polished, full-band In the Eyes of Strangers. Produced by local indie notable Ethan Allen, best known for his work in various Kristin Hersh's projects, and featuring guest spots from friends like Tegan Quin and Erin McKeown, In the Eyes of Strangers is a crisp, full, but not over-produced album that sounds more radio-ready than anything else Ferrick has ever released. Featuring a typically solid set of songs highlighted by the easygoing shuffle "Everything You Get" and the outstanding, lyrically barbed "Miss Liberty," which features one of Ferrick's finest vocals ever, In the Eyes of Strangers isn't notably different in tone from any of Ferrick's previous albums, but it's somehow more satisfying than most.

YEA - another Melissa Ferrick release! Old fans will love it and new fans will enjoy the upbeat tunes “Closer” is a toe-tapping favorite that is definitely worth the download. Although the product descriptions call this her strongest release to date, die-hard fans may miss the acoustic feel of her previous albums and still want their favorite song or CD. None the less, the passion of Ferrick and influences of Allen producing and tremendous musicians have me singing happily in the car at the top of my lungs….

Another great album from a fantastic performer!!!!

Though live is truly the way to experience Melissa Ferrick - this album is full of amazing, really fantastic new music. "Never Give Up" is energetic, up-beat, and inspiring... "Closer" is just a fun little train-ride of a song... "One Year" is an endearing love song, "It's Been a Long Time" is melodious and beautiful... the album is just great from beginning to end! Definitely worth it to download the whole album - but "Never Give Up," "Closer," and "One Year" are my faves.

Such a great example of how artists can grow all the time.

This album blew my mind when I heard it. It takes so much of what Melissa is already great at and blends in this lovely, joyful twang with it. Such a great piece of art. Nice going lady. ;)

Singer/songwriter Melissa Ferrick emerged in 1994 as part of a group of new female alternative singer/songwriters, much in the vein of Liz Phair. Raised in Ipswich, MA, she began singing in coffeehouses after dropping out of college and eventually wound up in Boston. Her major breakthrough arrived one night when she replaced Morrissey's opening act less than an hour before showtime. Ferrick's performance impressed Morrissey, who invited her to open for him during the rest of the tour. The tour earned...
