Album Review

Following the bungled American release of Twice Removed, it seemed unlikely that Sloan would survive, let alone record an album as wonderful as One Chord to Another. On the group's previous album, Sloan had refashioned itself as a power pop band, often with terrific results, but on One Chord to Another the songwriting blossoms. Filled with catchy, jangling riffs and memorable melodies, the record is a tour de force of hooks and harmonies, filled with exceptionally strong songs and forceful performances, which give the record a firm, rocking foundation. Few power pop records of the '90s are as infectious and memorable as One Chord to Another.

a charming little gem

1996 was a bleak year. Think back, if you will. Maybe you were 14, perhaps 20. Maybe you were skirting the far edge of young-adulthood. Regardless, at some point in 1996 you turned to a buddy and said "Rock is dead." But somewhere in that dark year, a quirky little band from Canada (it's a country, look it up) reinvented itself as a powerpop foursome and dropped the cutest nugget of rocking in many a day. Please, please buy this record. If only to hear the crisp horn parts on "Everything You've Done Wrong," if only to live the quiet perfection of "Junior Panthers," if only to imagine - maybe just for a moment - a 1996 where music was alive and fresh and fun, buy this record.

One of the Best Albums of All Time!

Not much to say here except that OCTA is one of the best albums of all time. Every song is amazing and combined together is makes this album a timeless classic. If you don't own it yet, buy it and listen to it for days...it will stay with you forever!!

the little band that could

even on itunes sloan seem relatively unknown... just a handful of 5-star devotionals from folks who are probably like me: heard sloan's underwhelmed in '92 on mtv's 120minutes while growing up in a small town. now, we've all grown up & i still love sloan & try to tell anyone who'll listen that they're one of the most under-rated bands around. cheers.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Sloan were one of the most successful Canadian bands of the '90s, which was both a blessing and a curse. While they were well known in their homeland, where their Beatlesque power pop became a radio staple, they had a difficult time breaking into the American market, especially after their label, DGC, decided not to market their hooky pop in the wake of grunge. After spending several years fighting the label, and nearly breaking up, Sloan re-emerged in 1996 with One Chord to Another, a record that...
