iTunes Review

Brooklyn’s Chairlift had nice boost on takeoff when the irresistible pop bauble “Bruises” appeared in an iPod commercial. Caroline Polachek’s trill (come on, sing along: “For you-ooh-ooh, you-oooh-ooh . . .”) filled living rooms across America; even the dog’s ears pricked up. Who was that? It turns out this rather experimental trio is more than a one-trick pony, and its debut album, Does You Inspire You, is full of lush and entrancing pop sounds that put a psychedelic spin on mixing otherworldly contemporaries like Bachelorette with old-world new wave pop overlords like Thompson Twins and Japan. The band's playful side dabbles in twang (“Earwig Town” is a delight) and French sassiness (“Le Flying Saucer Hat”). The serious side ruminates—with chic nightclub cool—on our eco failures (“Garbage”). Whether going for pure, catchy earworm pleasure (“Bruises,” “Perfect Utensil”), intergalactic chilling (“Territory,” “Ceiling Wax”), or cerebral gymnastics (“Dixie Gypsy”), Chairlift rises gracefully to deliver. This impressive debut is packed with many goodies.

I first heard their hit BRUISES on a little baby squirrel video and fell in love with that song. I can never get enough of it. So... BUY THAT SONG!!!!!!

Loving It!

When I first heard "Bruises" I was like this is interesting but after listening to the song over & over I decided to buy the album. Now I've heard all their songs and they are AMAZING! REALLY. Listen to "Somewhere Around Here" its such a pretty song. Now "Evident Utensil" makes me wanna get up and DANCE! My favorite is "Dixie Gypsy" it has such a sexy rythem that makes you wanna sing along!... Ugh just buy this album it has so many good songs I had a a random play but I'm loving every single song! =) Thumps Up!

what an amazing album

This album has a farmiliar sound, but is entirely its own. The opening track (Garbage) sets the tone, with its organ background (Samba) and minimalist singing. The second track starts out with nature sounds and then leads into a very 80's friendly sound, the lyrics are very unique and original. The album delivers on all of its tracks and includes "Bruises" the song you may discover you've heard before. I think anyone who appreciates music will find this album a must have. Especially with songs like "Evident Utensil," "Territory," "Le Flying Saucer Hat," and "Don't Give a Damn," you'll find yourself wanting to listen to this album over and over!

Formed: 2006 in Boulder, CO

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York (by way of Boulder, Colorado, where they originally came together in 2006), the avant-pop outfit Chairlift formed for the unusual purpose of crafting music for haunted houses. After finding that their work transcended its original purpose, bandmates Aaron Pfenning, Caroline Polachek, and Patrick Wimberly pulled up stakes and headed east, eventually settling in that most musical of locales -- not to mention one always looking for new and unique ideas -- New York City....
