A Proper Record By A Proper Band

Great to see The Damned get their first ever top 10 album in the UK charts with this crowd-funded new LP. True to their punk, do-it-yourself, ethic 41 years into their career. But that’s the only thing ‘punk’ about this excellent set of new songs. This is early 80’s Damned revisited, with a sprinkling of Visconti’s Bowie-esque flourishes scattered here & there. ‘Look Left’ & ‘Shadow Evocation’ are standouts for me, but they’re all good, melodic, songs that stick in your head after a few listens. I just hope they bring their Evil Spirits tour to the USA to hear these new songs live.

I’ll be Damned

40+ years, line up changes, various sound direction. The Damned have been a constant in an ever changing musical landscape. This album is not punk. It’s rock, mixed with a 70’s flair, a bit of synth and some goth remnants, reminiscent of Phantasmagoria. Overall, a great output with some really strong singles- the opener Standing On The Edge Of Tomorrow, Devil in Disguise, Look Left, and my two favorites; Shadow Evocation and I Don’t Care, make this album a must have. Music is not dead, neither is punk. The boys just took a break, and they sound Damned good.
