Album Review

This album got a lot of notice when it was first released because it is a debut album containing 42 songs, essentially demo recordings, by Georgia songwriter Jack Logan. In his notes, Peter Jesperson of Twin Tone Records mentions coyly that he heard about Logan from "guitarist Peter Buck" — careful not to drop the R.E.M. association. Without this connection, one doubts that there would be a Logan album, and certainly not a 42-song debut. The songs are occasionally interesting but mostly derivative rock and R&B tunes. The lyrics are certainly not distinguished. If this were as auspicious a debut as is claimed by some of the sticker blurbs, then there must be a thousand unknown geniuses just waiting to burst forth. On the other hand, one song, "Chloroform," has twisted lyrics and a cool distorted track.

Quantity, and Lo-Fi Quality

This is a great bunch of songs from a prolific songwriter. His style is like Jonathan Richman, Vic Chestnutt and Daniel Johnston all rolled up into one. He's a must for any lo-fi fan, and the songs New Used Car and a Plate of BBQ, and Floating Cowboy are nearly worth buying the album alone.

Maybe the best 1st record ever and

one of my all time favorites. I bought this after reading Tom Moon's review in the Phila. Inquirer and it was a classic at first listen - Thanks Tom and thanks Jack!
