Album Review

Out of the ashes of a group called Trip Shakespeare comes Semisonic, three guys who share a heavy melodic sense. Combining traditional rock instruments with ambient noise and electronic wizardry, they concoct an appealing sound anchored deep in rock and roll. "If I Run" is a gorgeous tune while "FNT" (which stands for "Fascinating New Thing") has hooks galore. A must for any serious fan of rock & roll with a twist.

Semisonic: greatest sleeper hits, 90's to today

Most people know Semisonic from their one (frankly overplayed) song "Closing Time", but this their first full album had two hits that were popular in many major states and cities (particularly southern..big in North and South Carolina), Detroit and Seattle. Those songs are F.N.T. and If I run. I love this album. It's dwarfed only by their follow-up album Feeling Strangley Fine, which is one of the few CD's I can listed to from the first to last track without skipping one.

Criminally overlooked

Semisonic hadn't had their big breakout with Feeling Strangely Fine and "Closing Time" yet when this album came out. They already deserved the attention, though. The bigger guitar sounds and harmonies of "F.N.T." (fascinating new thing) and "Delicious" give a nod to Trip Shakespeare, but Dan Wilson's gorgeous songwriting is as fully developed on "If I Run," "Brand New Baby" and a lot of the second "side" of the album as it would be on their blockbuster second release. If you enjoy other Semisonic stuff or just guitar rock with great hooks this album fits the bill!

Absolutely solid debut full-length

Semisonic's first full-length album is great all the way through. Songs from The Great Divide are standbys in the band's live shows - they're easy to sing along with, featuring great hooks and alternately meaningful and fun lyrics. I can't recommend this record enough!

Formed: 1995 in Minneapolis, MN

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After the breakup of Trip Shakespeare, Minneapolis natives Dan Wilson and John Munson teamed up with drummer Jacob Slichter to form Semisonic in 1993. Trip Shakespeare had spent years amassing a loyal audience with artistic harmonies and unexpected guitar counterpoints, but bandleader Dan Wilson took Semisonic in an entirely different direction, embracing a tightly crafted sound that proved to be more appetizing to mainstream audiences. "Closing Time" was the band's biggest hit, dominating the airwaves...
