Gang Gang Dance architect Brian DeGraw strikes out on his own under the confusing bEEdEEgEE moniker with a “solo” album that features plenty of guests and the type of sound manipulation that’s made him the gold standard for aspiring art-rockers working the EDM field. Sum/One isn’t a stylistic roundabout with DeGraw sampling the pleasures outside his former boundaries. There’s nothing here to take as confessional or soul-baring; he's in it for the artistry and the things that music can say without saying it. Los Angeles–based singer Douglas Armour lends his talents to the pop-like melody of “Empty Vases,” which would’ve fit right at home on bEEdEEgEE’s label 4AD back in its barrier-breaking heyday in the '80s. Gang Gang Dance’s own Lizzie Bougatsos puts her stamp of approval on “Like Rain Man,” while Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor adds his touches to the four-on-the-floor-until-it-isn’t “(F.U.T.D.) Time of Waste,” where Lovefoxxx further adds a gothic mystery to the dance-floor maze.
