Regardless of genre, the first thing I think about when evaluating a records is, "Is this artist pushing themselves or their medium forward?" If the answer is yes, I'm always willing to give the album a try. Sometimes I like it. Sometimes I don't. But at least I know I'm not wasting my time. And then, from time to time, I discover something truly exceptional. I get to hear music that not only appeals to me on a gut level (great hooks, virtuoso playing, solid beats) but on an intellectual one, as well (the longer I listen, the more I feel like I'm learning and discovering about the artist's message or perspective). This is one of those albums. It doesn't sound like quite like other music. Yet, at the same time, it's immediately enjoyable and familiar. And then that really great thing happens where the more I listen to it, the more I like it. I love it when that happens. And I love this record!
