iTunes Review

Ray Benson and his Western Swing revival band Asleep At The Wheel originally hailed from California, but it didn't take long for them to move to Texas, the former stomping ground of the music's master, Bob Wills. This rollicking tribute to Wills and his band has an impressive lineup of high-power guest stars, ranging from neo-traditionalists Tracy Byrd, Mark Chesnutt, and Lee Ann Womack to alt-country types such Lyle Lovett, and old-timers such as Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. Willie pulls off one of the album's great triumphs with his surprisingly sorrowful version of "Going Away Party," while the Dixie Chicks score a home run with the golden oldie, "Roly Poly," one of Wills's raunchiest blues tunes. Overall, this is a sincere and satisfying tribute, one in which the listener will have as much fun as the musicians who made it.

As good as the old stuff!

The pairing of artists with the particular songs they sang was absolutely perfect! I have always held such high esteem for Ray Benson and his crew for keeping a Texas tradition alive. ( only in the rest of the world do they call it Western Swing) Reba is phenomenal on Right Or Wrong. I always respected Asleep At The Wheel for keeping this sound ever present amidst the "high falootin" competition they must have from so-called "Nashville Country". You gotta respect a musician who "respects his elders", so to speak. These folks do that. Every time they play one of these numbers, they pay homage to Bob Wills, Tex Ritter, The Light Crust Doughboys and EVEN Patsy Cline! Seeing and hearing the folks who joined in on these wonderful songs now shows me who in Nashville is worthy of my respect. God bless Asleep At The Wheel! The sound of those twin fiddles just makes my eyes water!

Good Country

This is a great album. This is country from a time when it was actually good.

Since the early '70s, Asleep at the Wheel have been the most important force in keeping the sound of Western swing alive. In reviving the freewheeling, eclectic sensibility of Western swing godfather Bob Wills, the Wheel have earned enthusiastic critical praise throughout their lengthy career; they have not only preserved classic sounds that had all but disappeared from country music, but have also been able to update the music, keeping it a living, breathing art form.
