iTunes Review

Joseph Arthur is certainly making his presence known in 2008. He’s released a slew of EPs and now this full-length charged with an urgency that illustrates how his band of Lonely Astronauts are coming together. They're a loose-grooved outfit tackling their material with a dexterity and power that reflects their love for the Faces, Replacements, and Rolling Stones, all without calling out their obvious debts. From the opening scratch of the title track, Arthur is climbing the heights with music that builds to surly chaos, as his voice shreds with each inclining beat. The organ squeaks through “Faith” while Arthur twists into a Dylanesque delivery that carries over for “Say Goodbye.” “Surprise Dolls” walks with a Stones-like swagger with a swelling, psychedelic solo stuck to its middle. “Dream is Longer Than the Night” indulges Arthur’s laziest vocals; he squirms in languid delight as the band loiter behind, dropping notes in odd places. Arthur’s determined to find his voice by allowing all his influences to fall wherever they may. The result maintains a sense of wonder and palpable fun.

Astonishing!!!!

I have been a long time fan of Joseph Arthur, and have been anticipating this album ever since his ambitious announcement of the 4 EP's & 1 full length album for 2008! This album is nothing less than stellar! Joseph again illustrates his amazing faculty to create imagery through his music. Others may argue that this is not Joseph's best work, but the thing I have always appreciated about him is that he is never afraid to challenge people's perception of his music. Not only is his music constantly evolving, he never allows himself to be pigeon holed by sound or genre. This album is a must, & is absolutely brilliant!

Best Record of the Year!

Top to Bottom this is the best record I've heard all year! It's pure genius, pure fun, pure rock'n'roll! I could go on and on!

Fantastic album ...

Listening to this album makes me think Joseph Arthur had fun making this one. He deliberately gets away from some of his moodier, personal work and sounds a bit like the Stones, Dylan in this one. It's played whimsically. But it goes to show you how often the reviewers on I-Tunes have no clue ... saying "Say Goodbye" has Dylanesque delivery. Not at all. The song that does is "Dead Savior" -- which reminded me of the delivery on "Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat." And "Look Into the Sky" feels like Dylans lyrics set to Dire Straits music. I don't say the pejoratively. I find this album to be fascinating in its head nods and appealing in so many unique ways
