This Swedish metal band’s new lineup brings patiently undulating and majestically stormy riffs.

Return to form

Katatonia has outdone themselves on this album. They have returned to the dark, foreboding, beautifully majestic style that made them famous. This album is a lot heavier than Dead End Kings, which I liked, but I felt that did not hold up to The Great Cold Distance or Night Is The New Day. It has a heavy darkness like Viva Emptiness, and The Last Fair Deal Gone Down, with the cold, dark beauty of Night Is The New Day and The Great Cold Distance. All in all, the guitars are cranked up a little higher on this album, with a more distortion, crunch, and a more 'metal" feel. If I had to sum it up, I would say that it takes all of the best qualities of modern Katatonia and combines them into one amazing album. "The Night Subscriber" is one of my favorites, and is a good example of what I am trying to say. I absolutely love this album. If you like Katatonia, you will too.

Formed in 1991 in Stockholm, Sweden, Katatonia started out life as a studio-based two-piece. Members Jonas Renkse (known then as Lord Seth) was the band's vocalist and drummer, and Anders Nyström...
