Editors’ Notes

Jon McLaughlin delivers his tunes with a minimum of studio polish on Promising Promises. The album—a remixed and expanded version of his 2011 indie release Forever If Ever—finds the singer/songwriter taking an unflinching look at love's ecstasies and sorrows. His warm, earnest vocals are heard in bolder relief than on past efforts, thanks to his nuanced self-production approach. A lustrous piano carries most of the pop/rock melodies, backed with layered guitars and synths. The lyrics capture relationships in vivid detail, from unrequited fantasies (“If Only I”) to pledges of devotion (“I’ll Follow You”) and post-breakup regrets (“Falling”). McLaughlin’s yearning edge cuts particularly deep on bittersweet duets with Sara Bareilles (“Summer Is Over”) and The Voice’s Xenia Martinez (“Maybe It’s Over”). “My Girl Tonight” stands out for its hushed, tender vocal and sensitive lyric. Moving away from romantic themes, McLaughlin surrounds himself with an exuberant backup choir for the gospel-tinged number “These Crazy Times.”

Mixed feelings

Love Jon but super disappointed to see that I already owned more than half of this "new" album. Was hoping for more original tracks...

"Promising Promises" is a wonderful album! I especially love the fact that the title track is in response to his frustrations with his former label and ironically, they loved it and were oblivious to the fact that it was about them, or that Jon did exactly what they told him not to do! Jon can be so creative when he's a little rebel! Honestly though, the album as a whole is really great and I have been listening to it non-stop. Of the new tracks, I'm loving "Falling." And for those of you who are disapponted that this new album only has a few new songs, well Jon always said from the beginning that this album will have most of the "Forever If Ever" tracks remastered and a few new songs. He never tried to hide that fact. It hasn't even been a year since "Forever If Ever" was released. Jon hates rushing to put out another album, just for the sake of putting another album out. He pours his heart and soul out into his music and true talent can not be rushed. I don't think you can find another more humble, talented and underrated singer-songwriter out there. Also love the bonus acoustic tracks!

The album of his career

Jon I've been following your music for many years. Yoiu are one of the few artists that are real. Great voice, great style and overall great performer. Cannot wait till you come to NYC!
