EDITORS’ NOTES

Sonic-chaos mongers Veil of Maya conjure up even more brutal metalcore tricks on their sixth album, False Idol. Although the earthshaking "Pool Spray" and the string-dusted "Manichee" offer up bursts of hypnotically clean vocals, the majority of the record hews toward death-infused sludge and ripping displays of technical prowess. Digital zaps give way to dizzying blast beats on "Follow Me," while twisted electronics devolve into meticulous fret workouts on "Whistleblower," and frayed metal thrashing dominates "Overthrow."

You're 100% high if you think this is like Periphery.

As a band pioneering their particular sound early on, they some how managed to tire out the original sound. I've been listening to them since their name hit the scene. The addition of this new vocalist has been 100% positive for the bands direction. While Periphery is spectacular in their own right, so is Veil of Maya! The ONLY resemblance between the two is that they have relatively the same singing voice. Veil of Maya has retained their heaviness, although I'm not sure of the rest of the album at this point, but Periphery has definitely dialed back heavy breakdowns and metal riffs while still sticking to djent. Both bands are exquisite and shouldn't be taken one over the other. This new album is going to be sick if the first singles are any example.

A decent attempt at evolution but all in all not wanted

Ive been listening to this band for a good long while. And I understand bands need to evolve and change. But this "evolution" doesn't seem to go anywhere we haven't already explored. It sounds like they are trying to be Periphery which is territory we've already discovered for most people in this genre. And I hate comparing bands to Periphery because most of the time it's not accurate at all. But when the shoe fits...
