A Real Unit

Hristo has put out another record of original music and the quartet sounds like what it is; a real band. They play empathically, and uncompetitively. I really enjoy hearing their individual personalities come out.
Hristo often uses his own paintings as covers, and it is appropriate. The music has a colorful, atmospheric effect. The tunes develop patiently, and breath. You might easily think of mid-late 70's Pat Metheny.
Hristos takes fluid, precise solos and has obviously put a lot of attention into getting a very clear, present guitar tone, with a certain hollow-body depth to it.
Weber Iago has a classical touch and his clever note choice implies complex harmony over some of the simple, canvas-like chord progressions.
Dan Robbins achieves a very unique and attractive upright bass tone, with a pronounced sustain, that sounds very natural and cello-like (perhaps a 5 string upright?). His bass solos are quite astounding on this recording.
And Mike Shannon often lends a busy, but light-wristed polyrhythmic approach which really fills things in.
Overall, a strong artistic statement, and very easy to listen to in various contexts.
