EDITORS’ NOTES

Though Crystal Syphon was a regular act on the same storied San Francisco psychedelic circuit that birthed Moby Grape, The Quicksilver Messenger Service, and The Grateful Dead, the group never hit major-label pay dirt or reached the same heights of critical and popular acclaim. Until the 2012 release of Family Evil, none of Crystal Syphon’s recordings had even been officially released. This album has nine studio demos and a single live cut recorded at the Fillmore West in the late ‘60s. Despite their humble provenance, these tracks are remarkably polished. Though the group began as a rough-hewn teen garage outfit, by the time Crystal Syphon cut these demos the members were seasoned; many of these tracks boast sophisticated arrangements, Byrds-like harmonies, and blistering instrumental work. Particularly remarkable are brooding, minor-key numbers like “Marcy, Your Eyes" and extended psychedelic workouts like “Fuzzy and Jose." For anyone interested in the hidden history of San Francisco psychedelia, Family Evil is essential.
