Album Review

Just like the name implies, Pablo Cruise glides like a warm breeze. Alongside other bands that blew out of the chrysalis of early light and easy radio, Pablo Cruise swayed natural and cool, evoking a rock unit transplanted in Bermuda, entertaining by the pool. "Love Will Find a Way" (probably no connection to the Yes song) grooves like Player in a Hawaiian shirt with a deep, dark tan. This stylish summer single effortlessly scaled to the top of the charts. Follow-up "Don't Wanna Live Without It" is another crafty cocktail. Then Worlds Away hits adult contemporary cruise control until the whole crew packs up to "Go to Rio" (a perfect cover closer). Pablo Cruise adheres to corporate rock rules, and wrote groovy music for smooth sailing.

August 1979

Summer band practice before my senior year of high school. There's a new girl, moved from Texas. Tall, tan, long legs, white shorts. After practice we talk. I drive her home, ask her out, she says yes. Days later, pick her up, playing this album on the 8 track player in my car. Park at the pizza place, kiss to "Runnin'". The kiss builds like the song does. We go out for 18 months. First love, best time of my life. This album was there at the start.

Short and sweet...

Two songs from this album resonated with me back in the day: "Family Man" and "Runnin." I recorded them onto a mix (cassette) tape with several songs from Ambrosia and Alan Parsons and wore that sucker out. The rest of the album is imminently forgettable. Do give "Runnin' " a listen, at least. For $.99, you can't go wrong, and there's some nice keyboard work to be heard in the song.

Pablo Cruise achieved some measure of success during the latter part of the '70s with their mellow, easygoing California pop. The band was formed in 1973 by former members of Stoneground and It's a Beautiful Day: guitarist Dave Jenkins, keyboardist Cory Lerios, bassist Bud Cockrell, and drummer Steve Price. The group was praised for its compositional and instrumental skill on the albums Pablo Cruise and Lifeline, and was rewarded with the Top Ten hit "Whatcha Gonna Do?" in 1977 from A Place in the...
