Album Review

Oceanborn wasn't just a hit in Finland, it also opened new doors for Nightwish abroad. So naturally, the pressure to come up with a comparable sophomore album was enormous. Rarely does a band fulfill the demands of a second album successfully, and Nightwish is no exception. Even though Wishmaster is mainly targeted to radio and pop audiences, it does succeed somewhat. Even more demanding listeners will find this as enjoyable as they did Oceanborn, but Wishmaster isn't as consistent as that album was. The same patterns repeat, and every track's hook is based on a powerful intro and a simple chorus. Their charm is in their overflowing drama and, as it was on their first album, the whole concept can be described as "operatic metal." It may sound inventive and full of potential for a while, but as a whole album (and with this release it's two albums), it can be a little annoying, even frustrating. Still, a lot of listeners will enjoy it; after all, it does have its moments. [A Japanese version included bonus tracks.] ~ Antti J. Ravelin, Rovi

Customer Reviews

Wishmaster is Incredible!

Itunes has finally released this masterpiece, (almost a decade since the album was released), and it is a good thing, since the album is amazing! The album tends to focus on fantasy-themed songs. The whole album is great, but the must-haves on this album are She Is My Sin, Wishmaster, and Dead Boy's Poem. You are only depriving yourself of great music if you don't buy the whole album.

Nightwish at long last more nightwish!!!!

This is a must have! They finally got more nightwish. All the new albums are worth getting. Personally, Anette and Tarja are both good it's just a little different from one an another. Either way it's nightwish and if you're being pick and choosy and not buying the whole album i recomend wanderlust, sleepwalker and wishmaster!

You HAVE TO love Nightwish

I am so glad iTunes finally released all the Nightwish albums!!! It makes me sooooo happy!!! Wanderlust, She is My Sin, Dead Boy's Poem, and 'course, Wishmaster are some of the best songs on this album.... Keep on rocking Nightwish, be it with or without Tarja!!

Following in the footsteps of the Gathering and Lacuna Coil (goth-influenced "symphonic" metal bands with female vocalists), Nightwish were formed in Kitee, Finland, in 1997 by keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen. Initially attempting to create acoustic music, he recruited trained opera vocalist Tarja Turunen, but soon added full metal band instrumentation in the persons of guitarist Emppo Vuorinen, bassist Sami Vänskä, and drummer Jukka Nevalainen. Nightwish's demos landed them a contract with the Finnish...
