Unusual Rhythmic Pieces

This disc consists of a number of short lute pieces from various composers from the late 1500’s to the early 1600’s. The liner notes go into descriptions of the lives of the various composers, at least as best they can given that in some cases little is known. The liner notes themselves are well written and informative.

The pieces from the Thysius Lute Book (the first six tracks) are particularly pleasant. The first of the two Gregorio Huwet Fantasia’s (track 7) is rather dark, whereas the second is much warmer and self-driving. Both are extremely well played. But the Nicolas Vallet pieces (tracks 8-11) have a distinctive European feel to them, perhaps owing to the fact that Vallet was French and settled in the Netherlands.

The set of pieces from Joachim van den Hove are wonderful, and more than a little bit difficult. But Mr. Bailes playing is crisp, warm, and articulate, making them truly a delight to listen to. Windeken (track 19) is just lovely. The last track on the disc is from Emanuel Andriaenssen, and it is jaunty and full of technically difficult runs, not that you would know that from listening to Mr. Bailes play it. Makes my fingers hurt just listening to it!

This is a wonderful disc, filled with lute music that is not typically heard but that is satisfying just the same. Every work on the recording is performed well. If you like lute music, you’ll love it. Highly recommended.
