This 1982 gem is a template for modern indie pop—short and sweet, with a dash of punk. The Glasgow band's debut album offered a bright alternative to the pervasive gray of the post-punk scene. Jangly guitars duel with sharp beats and jagged basslines, making for catchy dance-punk grooves (“Tender Object”) and poppy, horn-kissed love songs (“Wan Light” and celebratory Al Green cover “L.O.V.E. Love”) by the songwriting team of Edwyn Collins and James Kirk, whose wit is as sharp as their hooks.

The leaders of the Scottish neo-pop uprising Orange Juice formed in Glasgow in late 1976.
