Superb - The “Sistema” at work !

The Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra and the “Sistema” that created it and the tens of thousands of Venezuelan musicians in the past 3 decades, comes to life and proves yet again that Venezuelan musicians are world class, in this superb performance of Beethoven’s Symphonies Nos. 5 and (my favorite) 7.

Excellent rendering of Beethoven!

This is how Beethoven - especially the Fifth - should be played: full of exuberance and energy…a great job, and I think Ludwig himself would have loved it!
And don’t let the name “Youth Orchestra” fool you - these are world-class players that combine youthful vigor & freshness with discipline…another masterful performance from Mr. Dudamel. I caught this performance of the Fifth Symphony on my local classical station, and that - combined with my amazement with Mr. Dudamel’s Verdi Requiem on PBS, decided it was a “must have” and I am not disappointed. Count me in as a newly-minted Dudamel fan!

Bernstein's 1963 recording (Sony) of the first movement has always been far and away my personal favorite. I often enjoy Bernstein in particular because of his ability to suffuse any passage with, for me, the right emphasis, the right emotion. So here I compare Dudamel's recording with, in my mind, one of the greatest recordings in music. Where Bernstein brings emotion to the repertoire, this recording brings enormous passion, the passion of youth, to one of the most powerful movements in classical music. I had tears in my eyes, my body was pulsing. With a trained ear you will hear Bernstein's New York Philharmonic's technical vertuosity has not been surpassed. BUT, it is rivaled here, and their passion will make you weap.
