Fever Focus - EP Jacques Greene
EDITORS’ NOTES
Jacques Greene made his name with the ebullient vocal chops of his 2011 bass-music anthem “Another Girl,” but on this six-track EP, he largely shelves the R&B influence for moody, heads-down house and techno grooves. He hasn’t abandoned singers entirely, but their voices are subtler than before—less the main attraction than a watercolor wash meant to set off the mournful synth chords of “Avatar Beach” or the punchy 808s and Reese bass of “Perlant.” The title track shrinks the human element to a single airy syllable that’s looped like clouds of colored smoke over dusky, melancholy acid, and “Nordschleife,” another highlight, does something similar: Against rugged, Jersey-inspired breaks and trunk-rattling bass, wordless vocals float like wintry puffs of breath, rounding out the tune’s icy atmosphere.
