Swollen Members are DOPE!!

this is a good mix of their old music in the balance era, I heard most of the songs before but I am a core fan and I throughly enjoyed this even if your not fimilar with Madchild & Prevail its a good listen for anyone who loves that backpacker hip hop from the 90s, can't wait for the next LP and Mads solo WARRIORS STAND UP!!!

Reminds me of the Battle Axe Records days

This album is a compilation of a lot of older recordings, mostly from the Defenders of the Underworld, Lyrics of Fury II, and Balance (UK) albums. "Canada 3000" was formerly titled "End of the Story," "Field of Dreams" was "Molten" and was a B-side on the Defenders of the Underworld Single Two. "Roller Coaster" was previously labeled as "Switchblade," just without the intro, and was on the Defenders of the Underworld album. The two songs that confuse me are "Original West Coast" (originally titled "Endangered Species" on the DotU album) and "Endangered Species" which I have always known as "Forceful," a bonus on some of the UK versions of Balance.

The only songs I haven't heard before are "Ether," "Post Rigormortim," "Agent Orange," "Fibreglass" (although Mad reuses a flow from the song Dark Riders on the Bad Dreams album), and "Faces of Death." None of these songs really stand out to me as something I would listen to very often, and if they truly were from the pre-Balance era I can see why they didn't make the cut.

Overall I enjoy the album but it's mostly because I've been listening to this stuff for the last 10 years. It reminds me of the era when I really fell in love with their music and I scrambled for every Battle Axe Records album I could find. I can't stand most of their newer stuff because it's just rehashed versions of the trite rap songs about guns, drugs, money, and women that we've been hearing from much inferior lyricists. Mad and Prev need to take it back again, like they did with Black Magic to cover up Heavy, and give us this same style but with new content.

Rollin w Swollen - Old school style

I loved Balance and some of these tracks would have been bangers back in 97.Still good today. Roller Coaster, Endangered Species, Canada 3000, Brace Yourself, Faces of Death are the highlights 4 me. I am very eager to hear what S&M have in store for 2012.

The meeting of two West Coast rappers fuelled this talented Canadian band. In 1996, Mad Child was a solo artist performing in San Francisco when he returned to his hometown of Vancouver. There he met Prevail, who was gaining attention for his energetic live shows and abilities. The two joined forces and headed to San Diego to perform at the annual B-Boy Summit. The group was initiated into the Rock Steady Crew, one of only three bands to do so. Following this, the group released three independent...
