Refreshing Album from Bang on a Can!

The Bang on a Can All-Stars made an extremely refreshing album here. Starting the album off with a composition from Julia Wolfe, a recent pulitzer prize winner, is a highlight. Florent Ghys brings humor and groove to "An Open Cage" featuring the voice of John Cage. It recalls the collaboration between Cage and David Tudor in their recording "Indeterminacy" where Cage reads his book "Silence" while Tudor plays in the background. A nice tribute to Cage there. Followers and fans of Christian Marclay will be happy with his musical effort here. "Fade to Slide" is another project with brilliant edits on the screen of films recalling Marclay's epic work, "The Clock." Including other works by artists such as Steve Reich, Bryce Dessner, David Lang, and Johann Johannsson makes this album a must have for lovers of new music.

Bang on a Can’s Edgiest Record Yet

For an ensemble who has made a name of fighting the conventions of classical music, “Field Recordings” may be their deepest and most rewarding foray into experimental sound. 14 composers push their own boundaries as well, writing outside of their comfortable pure acoustic (Wolfe, Lang, Clyne) or electronic (Calix) paradigms to make something fresh and fearless. The spread of aesthetics represented is wide, and the composers’ - and band’s - personalities shine throughout.
