iTunes Review

Too young his first time around to have a musical vision as mature as his guitar chops, former blues-rock prodigy Jonny Lang returns with his first album in seven years—and it’s a recasting of the young man’s musical world. Guitar solos are no longer the center of a performance, and the modern R&B and soul tracks here bring out his rhythmic side. Co-producer and co-songwriter Tommy Sims ensures that the songs are as important as musical virtuosity. “Breaking’ In” and “We Are the Same” nail down a Lenny Kraits–Sly Stone sound that’s grand and festive. “What You’re Looking For” is the sound of a young man personally searching, despite being able to perform musically at a Stevie Wonder level. It’s this disconnect that gives the album an unusual tension. Rarely has a young artist been so musically accomplished and presented so sleekly that his genuine young man–existential cares seem impossible in light of his studio sophistication. But there’s a fragile soul lurking on each track.

Jonny Blew Up (more than The House)

I wouldn't call this a long awaited project from the last great teen guitar playing protege and Grammy winning Blues rocker. I wouldn't call it a 'Jonny's back' moment either. I would call it a fire that has been 7 years from kindle to the verge of trending @ viral. If the rest of the trax are as fresh as Blew Up (The House) then you can truly say that the Kid Jonny Lang has been on one hell of a Big Bang journey since the early days in Fargo. And who can blame him for taking steps to discover his own way and how to be true to himself.

While the blues fan in many might get side tracked by the sound of a solid in your face - deep in the pocket groove that Blew Up throws down none of us would want to be found rolling in the same wheels that we owned when we first cranked Jonny's stellar "Lie To Me" project. So might we ask ourselves 'who am I to demand that Jonny's Fight For My Soul be dressed up in the same blues riffs and predictable progressions of yesterdays blues fathers'? I will warn you - that if you go closed on this one then you will surely miss a once in a lifetime chance to get inside of the tales of Jonny Lang's 7 year process of writing and more importantly LIVING thru "The Fight". If the blues ain't nothin' but a good man havin' a bad day then kudos to a good man putting the best moments of a bad day out on front street for all to see.

Finally I say ~ YEAH JONNY!!! I for one have been waiting for you to team up in the studio with THE incredibly gifted, Musician, Writer, Producer, Grammy Award winning Tommy Sims! Those recognizing the name as Co-Author of Clapton's Change Your World will witness this heavy hitting Groove Master at his funk-a-relic best!

I got a feeling that when this album drops in September that it will open many many blinded eyes.

So bring it again Jonny Lang and let the blood fall off the edges of our paradigms and let it all puddle to the ground. And if it should flow to the lowest part of my own days and nights might I find flight to see the morning light and as a bonus prize I know I'll get a slammin' sound track to lead me through my own soul battles.

Lost without his blues roots

Johnny Lang was the most promising young blues artist of the last 30+ years, but his fall from grace was hard and fast when he forgot his roots. A blues genius the likes of which hasn't been seen since BB King is simply mediocre at best in the other genres he explores during his refusal to give his fan base what they crave.

Yuk!

Sounds like just another R&B singer. Nothing wrong with R&B, but he just doesn't stand out like he used to.

Biography

Born: January 29, 1981 in Fargo, ND

Genre: Blues

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Modern blues in the '90s had a weird phenomenon of teenage blues guitarists rocketing to popularity with their first album. The entire trend culminated with Jonny Lang, a guitarist from Fargo, North Dakota, who released his solo debut album, Lie to Me, when he was 15. At the age of 12, he had attended a show by the Bad Medicine Blues Band and began playing with the group. Several months later he became the leader, and the newly renamed Kid Jonny Lang & the Big Bang relocated from Fargo to Minneapolis...
