Album Review

At the time of its release, Bajo el Azul de Tu Misterio was the highest debuting alternative rock album on the Billboard Latin charts, an accomplishment that is given more weight by the fact that it is a double album. Jaguares, playing upon their rapidly expanding popularity in Mexico, recorded this mixture of live and studio tracks with an almost orchestra-sized group of supporting players, resulting in an incredibly ambitious album. Their greatest Mexican influences seem to come from their Spanish lyrics, largely written by Saul Hernández, that often deal with the issues of social justice and culture — otherwise, this album sounds like a mixture of Metallica, Def Leppard, and early U2. Overall, though, the mix works and the legion of supporting producers and players have made a slick, professional album that should please fans on both sides of the border.

(The way I see it, rock en espanol is rock. in. spanish... It's like taking a song from Metallica and translating it into Spanish. Latin rock, on the other hand, is when a song has an electric guitar, but also congas, trumpets and other latin elements. These two genres are always mixed up and people refer to them as if they were synonyms, but they're not...

That being said, I am proud to say that this album by Jaguares is the best rock en espanol [in the first CD] and the best Latin Rock [in the second CD] that I have heard. Even when Jaguares uses latin instruments, they do so in a way that their songs still sound dark. Without a doubt, this is the best Spanish rock album I've heard... by far. Jaguares does not compromise their identity. It doesn't try to be thrash and scream like so many argentinean and spaniard bands do, trying to imitate America's 80's rock. Neither do they try to imitate american punk bands of these present days. Jaguares is melodic and heavy at the same time or they focus in one of these elements as necessary. In a few words, if someone who has never heard Spanish rock asked me for something good to listen to, this album would be my recommendation.)

Puts!!!

In 1995, Jaguares was formed out of the skeleton of Califanes, a Mexico City rock group. The name change was due to a dream had by lead singer Saul Hernandez, who dreamt that he was playing inside a Jaguar's mouth. Shortly after the name change, Jaguares took off in popularity, becoming one of Mexico's most loved rock bands. Their first album, El Equilibrio de los Jaguares, released in 1996 by RCA International, built a solid fan base in a time when it was difficult for Mexican rock bands to get...
