Wonderful

Another great symphonic arrangement by Merregnon Studios. It maintains the spirit of the original composition of themes, but gives something new at the same time. A really an enjoyable album to listen to. I can't see what they come up with for Final Symphony II.

lovely, sophisticated medleys of beloved melodies

The music herein has quite a bit more depth than the average Video Games Live medley arrangement. The arrangers really did their best to turn the melodies from these games into symphonic works that could be played at a concert of “serious” contemporary classical music, and I think they were largely successful. They can’t get away from the fact they’re still arranging medleys, but they’re certainly more interesting than the average video game medley. The Final Fantasy X piano concerto is especially fun, playful, and effective, while I felt the Final Fantasy VII symphony took itself a bit too seriously. The Final Fantasy VI tone poem was a bit more along the lines of a straightforward medley, so it didn’t catch my fancy as much. The rest of the tracks are essentially fun filler. All in all, quite enjoyable if you’re a fan of “serious” classical music along the lines of Mahler, Stravinsky, Corigliano, and John Adams.
