For Music Lovers

If you’ve seen the movie Before Sunrise, you remember the first track on this compilation, “Come Here.” If you haven’t, this could be the best music you’ve never heard. It has everything, but the first thing you'll notice is the voice. Tender and haunting on some tracks; filled with strength and resolve on others. It's not that it’s flawless. Ms. Bloom on occasion pushes the edge beyond even her limits. And you love her the more for it; she seldom plays it safe. There's really no good comparison—she’s simply Kath Bloom: vocalist, song-writer and musician extraordinaire. After hearing these songs several times, you realize that it's not just a wonderful and unique voice, but wonderful and unique music. The songs have a timeless feel to them with a familiar folk and country heritage. At the same time, like her voice, the songs are fresh and beyond neat categorization. There are no fences here. The music is infectiously melodic and rhythmical, and often there is a progression that lends complexity to otherwise simple and spare compositions. There's sadness in the lyrics, but also humor and word play. As for subject matter, it's as free as it wants to be: from love and pain; to pride and regret; to time and money; to sin and redemption; to dreams and machine guns on the street. You get the picture. You won’t hear Finally on top 40 radio. It’s adult alternative music with uncommon depth that invites and rewards repeated listening. In sum, this compilation is a thing of beauty and truth, brilliantly sung and brilliantly played. It’s music not just worth listening to, but worth re-visiting time and time again.

The daughter of oboist Robert Bloom, Kath Bloom is an American singer/songwriter comparable to Vashti Bunyan. She grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, where she studied the cello as a child and started playing the guitar when she was a teenager. Bloom collaborated with Bruce Neumann in the early '70s, but it wasn't until she met avant-garde guitarist Loren MazzaCane Connors in 1976 that she started recording. Bloom and Connors recorded five albums of fragile, simple folk and blues melodies, the majority...
