Turning was recorded in London in November of 2006, a year and a half after the release of ANOHNI's breakout sophomore album, I Am a Bird Now. The concert was a multimedia collaboration with video artist Charles Atlas. While you can't see the 13 women, some of them transgender, standing on stage with ANOHNI, you can feel their stories in songs like "For Today I Am a Boy" and "You Are My Sister." Augmented by occasional strings or drums, the songs revolve around ANOHNI's expressive voice and dulcet piano playing. "Hope There's Someone" is as powerful today as it was then.
