Editors’ Notes

The Cult stuck to their guns on their fourth album by igniting sexual charges (“Sun King,” “Sweet Soul Sister”) and keeping a kind of shamanistic shroud over things (“Medicine Train,” “Soldier Blue”). Singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy offer up a bounty of big-drum, big-riff philosophies and hedonistic dreams that come off as rare insights for mainstream hard rock. The ballad to Andy Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick (“Edie,

Sonic indeed!

In terms of sound, this one's the peak. Starting with "Love" and up to this album, the band created a pretty unique mosaic of themes and styles. "Electric" turned their more 'fashionable' fans on to the joys of the Les Paul and 4/4 time. "Sonic Temple" staked a claim for Arena rock supremacy. Now, I never thought of the band as an Arena type band. Ian's lyrics were too intimate and elemental for stadiums. Even songs like "Wild Flower" or "Electric Ocean" serve a smaller venue(Whiskey soaked pub/roadhouse? Yeah I know-bands cant play little clubs forever). But on "Sonic Temple", the songs neede to be heard from the rafters. "Soul Asylum", "Sun King", "Fire Woman" are MASSIVE rock songs. This one proved their biggest commercial success. Hipsters and Posers alike could barely resist this beast.

post-gothic rock

most people, who are hardcore cult fans, will probably rate love as the best cult album. this was the first compact disc that i ever bought and would have to say that it represents their climax as musicians. turn this album up every time someone tells you that rock is dead. timeless sound...

Some of the bery best I've ever heard!

Growing up as a teenager in the 70's, we had the firsts, Led Zepllin, Black Sabbath, Rush. Everything since has been so copy cat I can't stand it. Never was into the Goth thing. But I love good old fashioned heavy metal done right. One day I'm in a Goth clothing store in New Orleans around 1993-ish, and this song comes in the store that just blows me away. Being Cherokee and all, it was awesome, it was "American Horse". It blew me away. I've been hooked on The Cult ever since. If you want to know what REAL metal is, this is it, as pure and honest and basic as it can get, and as good as it can get as a ture art form! These guys rock, period! If you are into hard rock, rock and roll, heavy metal, alternative, etc, this group, specifically this CD, is a MUST HAVE for your serious collection!
