Firework

Firework

The Baltimore-based art-pop group New God—the work of brothers Kenny and Curt Tompkins—sport the kind of beautiful harmonies that immediately draw comparisons to The Beach Boys. That the group’s second album, 2014’s Firework, features a song called “Summer Girl” that lives up to its beach-friendly vibe just furthers their likeness. The harmony-rich “Ocean Hum” solidifies the connection, but New God are also interested in exploring lo-fi folk and avant-garde fuzz. The nine-minute finale, “Dumb,” is a mix of the original song that ends shy of four minutes; a minute of silence and raw vocal tapes further explore the harmonies with simple acoustic accompaniment and the subtle rise of keyboards and fuller instrumentation. The album's loose feel—combined with the serious musicality and unorthodox instrumentation behind songs such as the title track, “Summer Girl,” “More,” “I Know Something About You,” and “In a Flash”—creates a serendipitous sense of joy and discovery. It represents the magic that indie records occasionally capture with their eclectic influences and daring pacing.
