iTunes Review

Back in 1989, the Long Island trio De La Soul changed the game with its classic Prince Paul–produced debut, 3 Feet High and Rising. In the 20+ years since, it's released a ton of great music and maintained its legendary status. On First Serve, Dave and Pos make a welcome return to the microphones for a concept album set to whimsical, multi-genre throwback beats courtesy of the French production team 2 & 4 (Chokolate and Kahlid). Adapting the alter egos of aspiring emcees Jacob Barrow and Deen Whitter, they give us a musical story of two young rappers and their eventful journey from the basement to the charts. They bring us a dozen dope tracks full of storytelling verses and unpredictable yet consistently funky beatwork, interspersed with several quality skits. Standouts joints include "Small Disasters," "We Made It," "Clash Symphony," and the rollicking blues-rock jam "The Book of Life."

Take Note Wack Rappers

Lil wayne are you listening?

I like this new album but can we get some older De La Soul albums please?

This is what rap is supposed to be!

They just top themselves album after and keep getting better. This is what rap should be about.....and yes I agree take note phony rappers and crappers like Lil Wayne, Wiz, Wocca......learn some real deal and spin this LP maybe you will look in the mirror and realize how wack you are, and how you are taking away from the artform. Not hating just being real and tired of the rut that hip hop is stuck in.....If it were not for De La and Tribe where would we be? Buy this.

Somewhere between a band and a concept, First Serve features two-thirds of the legendary hip-hop crew De La Soul -- Plug 1 (Dave) and Plug 2 (Posdnous) -- along with two French producers, Chokolate and Khalid. The project was born at a chance meeting after a De La Soul gig in Paris. A concept album concerning a fictional, rising hip-hop act was discussed, then Pos and Dave assumed new alter egos -- Deen and Jacob -- while Chokolate and Khalid began working on beats.
