iTunes Review

The House of Love was one of Britain's finest pop-rock bands at the end of the '80s, before Madchester and the grunge scene altered the definition of alternative music. The group's inability to connect with a wide audience in the U.S. was made even more difficult by acrimony within the group. But in retrospect, albums like this self-titled debut, plus the other self-titled album (often known as "The Butterfly Album" for its cover) and even the other self-titled collection of early singles (known as "The German Album") are packed with passionate playing and smart, emotive songwriting that bring out the best in singer Guy Chadwick. "Christine" is one of the group's more popular tunes, and it captures the zoning aura of The Jesus and Mary Chain in its constant tonal assault. "Hope" starts with a placid intro before finding its own desperate charge. "Love in a Car" swerves in from outer space and lands in the heart of a gorgeous hook. "Man to Child" elicits memories of The Smiths, with guitars that jangle like Johnny Marr and a melody that captures that twilight feeling.

Customer Reviews

The one and only album to get from The House of Love is...

the 1988 release, that's just my opinion.
I've been listening to The House of Love album for over twenty years.
Bought the disk at one of those bizzare record stores no one hardly heard of.
I can listen to all the songs from 1-10 without skipping a tune, music is timeless.
If you like indie-rock with a touch of shoegaze this is for you.

Still walking in me

I miss these guys so much and would give anything to see them come back to the States again, if only they could recruit Chris back to play bass, what a shoegazer he was, the boys are playing a festival in Poland next month (Aug-2012), lets hope they play some new songs, more shows and head over to America

The post-Smiths guitar pop of the House of Love was popular for a short time in the late '80s and early '90s, as many college and alternative rock fans became converts to their mixture of shiny ringing guitars, pseudo-psychedelic melodies, and bursts of noise. The British group formed in 1986; it featured Guy Chadwick (vocals, guitar), Terry Bickers (guitar), Andrea Heukamp (vocals, guitar), Pete Evans (drums), and Chris Groothuizen (bass). Their demo tape attracted the attention of Alan McGee, the...
