Album Review

Their fifth album, Atavist, finds Otep delivering another heaping helping of nu-metal. True to the title, Otep continues to feel like a throwback to the breakdown heavy nu metal of the late 90s and early 00s that was pioneered by bands like Korn. Once again, singer Otep Shamaya, whose frantic vocal style ranges from bellowing death growls to creepily sweet, does the bulk of the heavy lifting on the album, putting her vocal talents to work over top of a collection of nu-metal jams that could’ve been released a decade earlier. In a way, the approach makes sense. The approach works for the band, who do a great job of showcasing Shamaya’s vocals and message without standing in her way, making Atavist an album that will easily please Otep devotees.

Even Harder

This cd is harder than the rest, but still Otep. Buy it, don't buy this one first, get one of their first three to get into the depth. Then feel it's power.

This band really kicks a**

Every song on this album is good I love when i can just put a CD in and jam to every song. I recommend this album to anyone that likes rock. Best album i've heard in a long time.

diggin it

my only wish is that this band would cover FEAR OF GOD's debut of WITHIN THE VEIL,,,oteps vocals are the only ones close enough to cover what i think was a masterpiece,,hope the band checks these n considers it.........

The foursome began gigging around Los Angeles and scored a deal with Capitol solely on the strength of their live show (they'd not yet recorded a demo), releasing the Jihad EP the following year. Rumors of cannibalism and dabbling in the mystical arts helped add to their mysterious image, and they found themselves...
