Album Review

Ape to Angel may be the third record from Pitch Black in five years, but the two members of the New Zealand act had been accumulating experience in electronic music and production since the late '80s. The experience shows on Ape to Angel, a hypnotic recording that combines dub, dark trance and sampling. "Big Trouble Upstairs" is the closest they get to a dance club vibe, borrowing a little from the trippy work of Underworld. Otherwise, this is a chillout collection which relies as much on higher-end sounds as it does on deep bass grooves. The only thing that disrupts the vibe a tad are the vocals by Sandy Mill on "Elements Turn," which are a little too R&B and don't seem necessary when the rest of the album is relying on programming. Either way, Ape to Angel still fits appropriately into the Waveform catalog.

Excellent Chill-Out Album

This is a great album for any intelligent music fans. Sophisticated with a good beat and great ambience. One of the best electronic albums I have ever purchased. First heard it on Radio IO Ambient. Worth the download!!!!

This is some of the best ambient electronica I have ever heard. Super sexy background music for just about anything imaginable, or put on some headphones, turn on, tune in and blow your mind. Worth every cent.

This is a SUPERB find!

I love this music! It just sort of takes you to another place and time...really mellow but strong. My Burning Man slide show is to this music and it is perfect. The title cut is great if you don't want the whole album but I suggest getting the whole thing. One song will just leave you wanting more. There is nothing else I have that really compares to it...the Peter Gabriels soundtrack for the Martin Scorsese "Passion of the Christ" is the closest thing I can come up with, more along the lines of the emotion it evokes than the same musical style. Enjoy it-I certainly do! ps-this is the first musical review I've written-no one else had commented on this so I had to do it!
