Sing Me a Happy Song!

Funny, endearing and (sadly) overlooked Kander and Ebb Musical about a lovestruck girl, Flora Meszaros, caught up in the 'red tide' of communism during depression era NY. The OBC is filled with some great songs and Minnelli shines in the lead role (she subsequently became the youngest Tony winner for Lead Actress in a Musical for this part at age 19). She's great in numbers like "A Quiet Thing" but really gives it her all in "Sing Happy"--it's puzzling why this never became one of her signature songs! She is surrounded by some great talent including her leading man, Bob Dishy who isn't much of a singer but adds a lot of personality to his duets with Minnelli notably "Sign Here" and "Not Everyday of the Week"(an ode to a very akward romance). "The Flame", a spoof of Communist activism is another standout song thanks to the comedic talent of Mary Louise Wilson as Comrade Ada. A terrific cast album full of catchy tunes that should please not only K&E enthusiasts but fans of Minnelli as well.
