Hailing from Boston but already playing internationally, the young, award-winning McNally adheres to the Scottish and Cape Breton fiddle styles—known for their syncopation and driving sounds—on her debut album. Her playing has a light dancing quality; check out the opening “Waulking of the Fauld” to see what we mean. And McNally's strong narrative solo voice takes listeners along on a ride filled with twists and turns. Also seemingly bent on showcasing her compositional skills, McNally mixes original tunes with traditionals and songs by others, leaving listeners hard-pressed to figure out which is which on this program of instrumentals. Standout cuts include the adventurous “Bad Soup/Riff Raff and Widget” and the fiddle- and piano-driven “Jarvis Waltz.” While she gets strong support from guitarist Eric McDonald, pianist Neil Pearlman, bassist Corey DiMario, and accordion player Michael McLaughlin, McNally closes things out with her most dazzling individual turn on “Da Unst Bridal March”—but there's much to hear from her and her band before you get there.
