Musical perfection - as Adams always delivers

To previous reviewer - Im glad that you're aware and touched by the original tale. Congrats to you. To everyone else - this is another powerful and insightful, touching and beautiful, stirring and mesmerizing composition by one of America's FINEST composers to have ever lived. Act 2/Scene 3 duet is one of the most beautiful moments to come to opera in YEARS. The baritone and soprano both have gorgeous voices... the tenor, though (in that Adams helden tenor sort of way) is just not as easy to listen to... but the vocal demands for that role leave one with little choice of performer.

a masterpiece

Flowering Tree is one of Adams' most beautiful scores! Dont hesitate!

A remarkable work and a great introduction to Adams' music

John Adams has a unique sound, and this is a wonderful example. The story is great, the music fantastic (I especially like the opening of the second act), and the performances here are spot on. I'm not sure how the 1st reviewer hears Phil Collins or Walt Disney in this music - it's like no Disney movie I've ever seen (heard) and I'm at a loss to understand the Phil Collins comparison. If you are looking for a good short introduction to the operas of John Adams this is a great place to start.

Though his music shares several traits with that of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, or Terry Riley, Adams' music from his earliest works used a wide variety of melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic ideas, making his music perhaps more accessible to a new listener who might find works like Riley's In C or Glass'...
