An honest, calm review without the 'swooning'.
The Humble Beast roster shrunk to almost 'reset' levels which seems to show that the more 'artsy' musicians made the cut as they pulled back from basic Hip-Hop with borrowed loops and 'street cred' lyricism. Jgivens past work reflected more classic style hip hop with a touch of silliness but many times drowned out the catchiness with some very loud and monotonouse sampling.
Here we find the 'Beautiful Eulogy' gangs influence with more 'live ' music and string plucking while Jgivens finds a more sporatic and natural stride which seems to fit his 'metabolism' better. At first a few of the songs seem a bit perplexing or even a little cringeworthy with the odd vocal choices. However, the artistry and the melody that backs it makes it palletable after more than one listen because the understanding of the meaning behind these selections shines through. What seems disjointed at first comes together as an experiential album that really NEEDS to be purchased as a whole as it is a true musical 'novel' that untaps the potential of an artist, quite frankly, I didn't even like before.
